Description

This smoked Sheppard's/Cottage pie recipe is the perfect comfort food for those cold blustery days. Technically since this recipe calls for ground beef, this is called a cottage pie. Sheppard's pie traditionally uses ground lamb, but the two are generally interchangeable. The twist to this this recipe is that we smoke the ground beef on the pellet grill before assembling the pie. Once assembled it's finished off under the broiler and served in mini cast iron skillets. Simple, delicious, and comforting!

  1. Diced the onions and carrots, and mince the garlic cloves. Sauté until the onions are lightly brown and carrots start to soften.

  2. Add the ground beef and mix. Place in preheated 225F smoker for approximately 30 minutes.

  3. While the beef is smoking, cut and boil the potatoes until fork tender.

  4. Mash the potatoes with a potato ricer or masher. Add the butter, milk, cheddar, salt, pepper, and paprika then mix and set aside.

  5. Remove the beef from the smoker and back on to the stove top. Add the flour, beef broth, and peas, and mix.

  6. Bring the beef mixture to a simmer and let it go for 7-8 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  7. Spread the potatoes evenly across the beef mixture.

  8. Sprinkle the top with cheddar cheese and place under the broiler for 2 minutes.

  9. Remove from the broiler and allow to cool for about 10 minutes.

    Server and enjoy!
